Over 30 years ago, jazz legend Ron Carter approached La Bella Strings with a specific tonal vision: to create a double bass string that embodied the warm, organic depth of gut, the sustain and reliability of steel, and none of the drawbacks associated with either. He wanted a string tailored for jazz—especially for expressive pizzicato solos—that wouldn’t sacrifice playability, consistency, or tone.
In collaboration with Carter and renowned guitarist Attila Zoller, La Bella embarked on a months-long journey of experimentation and refinement. The result was the groundbreaking 7710N Black Nylon Tape Wound set, a unique construction that has since become a staple for serious jazz bassists worldwide.
These strings feature an outer wrap of smooth black nylon tape, giving them a sleek feel under the fingers and producing a clear, bright attack paired with a warm, rich sustain. The tone is full-bodied without being boomy, articulate without sounding metallic—making them ideal for jazz pizzicato, especially in solo settings where nuance and expression are essential.
While optimized for pizzicato, the 7710N set is also compatible with arco playing when paired with a synthetic bow and rosin designed for non-metallic or hybrid strings.
